La idea original del RSD va néixer als EEUU el 2007,i és la celebració de la cultura de les botigues de discos de música independents a tot el món.
Edicions especial de vinils i actuacions de grups musicals són presentats en exclusiva durant tot aquest dia a las botigues de discos.
Molts d’quests LPs estaran exhaurits a les poques hores degut al seu interés coleccionista i a les tirades molt limitades, algunes només de 1.000 unitats.
